I’m Kasim Kashgar—a Uyghur educator, journalist, and founder of Atlan Academy. I came to America by choice, sought asylum, and built this platform to help others rise through language, identity, and knowledge.
Our Story
Atlan Academy began not as a company, but as a mission—one rooted in a borrowed classroom and a burning desire to teach.
In 1999, while still in high school, founder Kasim Kashgar began teaching English to university students at Kashgar Teachers College (now Kashgar University). By 2001, as a freshman at university in Ürümqi, he launched his first organized classes under the name Mosaic, helping fellow students gain confidence in English.
In 2005, after representing China in an international debate in Australia and placing top in the CCTV Cup—a prestigious national English speech competition—he returned home with a new vision. He renamed his growing program Atlan. A year later, upon graduating, he officially registered Atlan Language Training Center in Ürümqi with a clear mission:
To teach. To uplift. To equip Uyghur youth with the power of language.
From 2006 to 2017, Atlan grew into one of the most trusted English learning institutions in the region, serving over 10,000 students each year—until it was forcibly shut down by Chinese authorities.
But the dream never died.
Today, Atlan rises again—online, borderless, and unstoppable.
This time, it’s not just a school. It’s a global platform where Uyghurs can learn, speak, and lead—on their terms, in their voice.
Meet Kasim Kashgar
Founder of Atlan Academy | Uyghur Educator in Exile
Kasim Kashgar is a Uyghur educator, entrepreneur, and journalist—born in Kashgar, East Turkistan, a region colonially renamed “Xinjiang” by China. At 13, he left school to run his uncle’s shop in the Sunday Bazaar. He later taught himself Arabic, Urdu, and English, returned to formal education, and enrolled at Xinjiang University in 2001.
In 2006, he founded Atlan Language Training Center in Ürümqi, which grew to serve over 100,000 students before it was forcibly shut down by Chinese authorities in 2017. Just weeks after being named a national “Model Young Entrepreneur,” he fled rising repression against Uyghurs—seeking asylum in the U.S. with his wife and young daughter.
In 2018, he became the first Uyghur journalist at Voice of America, reporting in English, Chinese, and Uyghur on the Chinese government’s crackdown in his homeland. His multilingual coverage helped bring international attention to the Uyghur crisis. In 2023, his story was featured in the VOA documentary From Fear to Freedom: A Uyghur’s Journey.
Today, he is rebuilding Atlan as a global digital platform—empowering Uyghurs everywhere to learn, speak, and lead with confidence.
